The holidays are filled with wonderful smells — pine trees, cinnamon candles, fresh cookies, and festive sprays. But if these cozy scents make you sneeze, cough, or feel congested, you’re not imagining it. For many people, strong fragrances and seasonal allergens can trigger symptoms that mimic — or worsen — allergies and asthma.
1. Live Christmas Trees
Fresh pine, spruce, or fir trees can carry mold spores and pollen, which may cause sneezing, congestion, or itchy eyes.
Tip:
Hose down your tree before bringing it inside and let it dry completely. Or try an artificial tree if mold is a known trigger.
2. Artificial Trees and Décor
Stored decorations often collect dust, mold, and pet dander over the year. Unpacking them can release these particles into the air.
Tip:
Wipe down artificial trees, ornaments, and garlands before decorating. Store them in sealed containers after the holidays.
3. Scented Candles and Sprays
Holiday candles, potpourri, and air fresheners contain chemical fragrances that can irritate sensitive noses and airways — especially in people with asthma or fragrance allergies.
Tip:
Choose unscented or naturally scented candles (like beeswax or soy) or use an essential oil diffuser with mild, pure oils — but only if tolerated.
4. Wood-Burning Fireplaces
That cozy fireplace glow comes with smoke that can irritate the lungs and worsen asthma.
Tip:
Keep the area well-ventilated, and if possible, opt for an electric or gas fireplace instead.
You don’t have to give up your favorite traditions to feel well.
A few small changes — like cleaning décor, choosing fragrance-free options, and managing humidity — can help you enjoy the holidays without the sneezing and wheezing.
If your symptoms keep flaring up despite these precautions, an allergist can help identify what’s triggering your reactions and find ways to keep you comfortable year-round.
