When it comes to keeping our homes clean, many of us reach for products labeled “unscented” or “fragrance-free,” assuming they are safer for sensitive skin or those with allergies. However, “unscented” doesn’t always mean these products are free from potential allergens.
“Unscented” typically means that no fragrance has been added to the product. But manufacturers often use chemicals to mask odors, which can themselves be irritants or allergens. In some cases, these hidden ingredients can trigger reactions in individuals with sensitive skin, respiratory issues, or chemical sensitivities.
Even products marketed as gentle or unscented may contain ingredients such as:
Preservatives like methylisothiazolinone or formaldehyde-releasing agents
Surfactants that can irritate skin or trigger respiratory symptoms
Masking agents that are chemically similar to fragrances
Solvents and stabilizers that may cause allergic reactions
People with eczema, asthma, or other respiratory conditions
Those with a history of skin allergies
Children, whose skin is more sensitive
Individuals recovering from chemical sensitivities or allergic reactions
Read ingredient labels carefully – “Unscented” does not automatically mean “hypoallergenic.”
Look for products labeled “free of dyes and harsh chemicals.”
Test a small amount first if you’re sensitive or prone to reactions.
Consider natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, or castile soap for some cleaning tasks.
Ventilate spaces well when using cleaning products, even if unscented.
“Unscented” cleaning products can be misleading for those trying to avoid allergens. Being vigilant about ingredients and choosing products carefully can help protect your skin and respiratory health. If you notice reactions like rash, itching, or sneezing, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
