If you’re considering allergy shots (immunotherapy), you may be wondering how long it will take to achieve results. Allergy shots are designed to retrain your immune system for long-term relief. That kind of change used to take months or years of weekly visits, until now!
At PURE Allergy & Asthma, we understand that patients want to see results sooner. That’s why we offer Rapid Desensitization as an option to jump-start your treatment! While traditional immunotherapy has been around for 100+ years, rapid desensitization has been around for 40+ years. The newer approach requires special training, which Dr. Dhawan is pleased to bring to our community. After a few visits and health checks, we will see if you are a good candidate for rapid desensitization, where the first year of shots are completed in less than 10 visits. Over the full course of treatment, you will save up to 100 visits to the doctors office! (Including hundreds of copays and hundreds of hours saved).
The overall goal of immunotherapy is to get your body used to the allergen so that it stops overreacting. The process is broken into two key parts:
1. The Build-Up Phase: Going from Zero to Hero
The purpose of the initial phase is to gradually increase the dose of the allergen to a level that is effective but still safe for you.
The Traditional Approach: Doses are increased slowly, usually once or twice a week, to help your body adjust without triggering strong reactions. This typically takes several months or years, and even longer with illnesses or scheduling conflicts.
The PURE Rapid Desensitization Approach: We condense the initial build-up. Through carefully monitored "rush" or "cluster" treatments, you can reach your full target dose much faster—often in just a few weeks! This speeds up your path to feeling better.
2. The Maintenance Phase: Locking in Long-Term Relief
Once you reach your full, effective target dose (whether through a rapid or traditional build-up), you enter the long-term phase.
The Maintenance Goal: Visits are spaced out to once a month. This phase typically lasts 3–5 years, allowing your immune system to fully "learn" not to overreact to the allergens. It is critical to complete this phase to ensure your relief is long-lasting.
Safety First: Whether rapid or traditional, allergy shots involve exposure to allergens. The process, while customized, is always slow and steady enough to help reduce the risk of side effects and keep the process safe under our close supervision.
By choosing a rapid build-up and committing to the maintenance phase, you maximize your chances for the best long-term outcome:
Fewer Symptoms Over Time: Many patients notice less sneezing, congestion, and wheezing after sticking with treatment.
Less Reliance on Medications: You may need fewer daily allergy pills or nasal sprays.
Long-Lasting Benefits: Unlike medications that only mask symptoms, allergy shots can provide relief years after treatment ends.
Improved Quality of Life: Enjoy better sleep, more energy, and the outdoors without constant allergy misery.
Commit to Your Schedule: Sticking to your appointment schedule (especially your long-term maintenance visits) is key to building lasting protection.
Track Your Symptoms: Note your progress over time so you can see how much your quality of life is improving.
Pair Shots with Other Strategies: Continue to use HEPA filters and keep windows closed during high pollen days until your treatment takes full effect.
Be Patient: Lasting relief is a marathon, not a sprint—even with a rapid start.
Allergy shots require time and consistency, but they offer something most treatments don’t: the possibility of long-term relief. By sticking with the process, you’re giving your immune system a chance to reset—making future allergy seasons easier to handle.
PURE Allergy & Asthma guides patients through every stage of allergy shot treatment, from rapid build-up to long-term maintenance. Call 267-396-7873 to learn more and take the first step toward lasting relief!
